During the reign of King Alfred, Danish forces have invaded the English countryside. Although the English try to repulse these attacks, they are overrun by the savagery and sheer numbers of the Danes. One of those deeply touched by these attacks is young Edmund. As a boy, he watched as his father was slain in battle fighting the Danes. Although young, he was intelligent, and noted the mistakes made on the battlefield.
As he grew into a man, he put that knowledge into use and created a uniquely trained group of soldiers and built a new, stronger ship called the Dragon. Manning this ship with his special soldiers, Edmund joins the battle for freedom from Danish oppression. His adventures take him all throughout Europe and lead to glory, wealth, and eventually love.

A century ago Henty was the children's author of choice throughout the British Empire. His adventures were filled with great characters, perfect role models for British youth. The stories are well paced and give an interesting insight into Victorian England. They are also well written, fast paced adventures. The Dragon and the Raven is a novel about the days of King Alfred. Like all Henty's books, this work aims at historical accuracy and reproduces the faith and concerns of the era. King Alfred is too little known today; his faith, and his reliance on God's law, make him of little interest to modern man. Henty gives a vivid picture of the horrors of the Danish invasions of England. For two centuries and almost three, Europe was almost shattered by the waves of invasions by the marauders from the north. The resistance to them, the gradual conversion of them, and the new Europe that emerged constitute a dramatic story. In the Dragon and The Raven, Mr. Henty gives us a fine fictional tale of one portion of that history. The hero is Edmund, a young Saxon thane, who enlists in the service of King Alfred. You'll be surprised to find how Alfred persevered through years of struggle.Product details

The Dragon and the Raven (Audible Audio Edition) G A Henty Susan Umpleby Lindhardt og Ringhof Books Reviews
Henty tends to be formulating, young hero in difficult situation triumphs. But the hero's challenges & how he must overcome the circumstances can be absorbing for pre-teens. As an adult reader, I found the details-daily life, hinge moments in history & the famous characters work as gateways to further investigation. I use these books for my12-14 year old sons as we study the Middle Ages in 6th grade.
Henty has many many books worth reading with my children. Try as we might, this one was just too long on the narration side. Historically accurate but short on "live action."
Though written many years ago, this book is a classic that reads like a contemporary novel. Extremely well researched, this is a one that the reader will be totally immersed in.
There is plenty of adventure, war, love, and sailing in this story of early England. It's too bad these stories are too politically incorrect to be made into movies.
My daughter was assigned this book for her 7th grade English curriculum through the Ron Paul Curriculum. I decided to read it along with her and we both enjoyed the book very much. I was fascinated by the details included by the author of both land and sea battles and the unique fighting formation established by Edmund and his Saxon fighting force.
This is a superb historical novel of the Vikings and their invasions of Britain. The central character is an intelligent young duke of King Alfred circa 870 AD.
It is very well written and with the dictionary feature the few uncommon words are quickly clarified. Clean prose and gets to the action right away!
Historically & literary-wise, another accurate and exciting book which our 14-year-old just finished! Set at the time of the Danish & Norse occupations of England, amidst the battles to free the English of foreign rule. It also encompasses naval warfare of that time & battles fought on the mainland to rid them of the same invaders. We appreciate the unbiased approach to history that G.A. Henty provides! He unflinchingly portrays the honorable men throughout history, from all over the world, not glossing over or diminishing the contrasting barbarity of others. It is refreshing to see history brought to life without England always being the center of the narrative or "the country without many historical flaws." The world owes much to English history, but not to the biased extent that U.S. textbooks often portray.
